FABLAB together with NBIC just completed a 2 day workshop for SME’s on product development and innovation!

We met a bunch of great, creatively charged individuals***

We found that a lot of people need help, with machinery, and label design/packaging being the most in demand.

When FABLAB’s doors open, we most certainly have our work cut out for us! There is a lot to be done, and more ideas and help needed - WE CAN’T WAIT!!!!

Wow, Monday morning madness, its been a crazy weekend prepping for this week ahead. Our week is off to a great start! We have found the other part of our puzzle - tentatively - and are very positive and ideas are flooding in for possibilities on the great PILOT FABLAB NAMIBIA :) onward and upward!

Cape Craft & Design Institute

The Cape Craft and Design Institute is a joint initiative of the Western Cape Provincial Goverment, AMTS, DST and CPUT. The CCDI incorporates a Fabrication Laboratory (Fab-lab), this laboratory is a high tech facility with open-source design software linked to digital desktop manufacturing technology.

This means that people in the emerging creative class will have access to improve their economic situation, grow their business and learn new skills.

Erica Elk, executive director of CCDI says ‘We aim at design that makes a difference to quality of life in our developing world.’ from South African crafts: style and social investment, Pingmag 2006.

One of the success stories is the range of wire tables and stools produced by Willard Musarurwa and developed by New York designer, Steven Burks, as part of the Aid to Artisans programme. They are being marketed in Italy and Europe by Enrico Basson of Artechnika and are availabe at Weylandts in South Africa.

We have been in contact with the amazing Kenyan FabLab — thank you for all the help and support Mr. Gachigi!

Meetings are going swiftly — have the Sme’s on board, NBIC was extremely interesting, DBN has helped greatly in lieu of further connections and just came back from a meeting with Mr Hipangelwa and his colleagues, we are feeling very positive and inspired, FabLab Namibia is moving forward to realization!

More meetings for next week —- so a presentation planning weekend ahead!
